Abstract
Introduction: Workplace bullying and discrimination negatively impact NHS staff well-being and patient care quality. Despite existing policies, these issues persist, reducing morale and productivity. This project proposes a comprehensive approach to evaluate current anti-bullying policies within the trust(s), nurture allyship and bystander intervention, and also implement awareness training to create a respectful and inclusive work environment.
Method: The project will use a mixed-methods approach. A review of anti-bullying policies across various NHS trust(s) to identify gaps. Anonymous surveys and focus groups with NHS staff will gather data on bullying and discrimination experiences. An intervention program will promote allyship and active bystander behavior, complemented by mandatory awareness training for all staff.
Results: The expected outcomes include identifying weaknesses in current policies and understanding the prevalence and impact of bullying and discrimination. The intervention program aims to increase reporting rates by significant numbers and improve staff perceptions of workplace support and inclusivity. The effectiveness of awareness training will be assessed through pre- and post-training surveys, with most participants expected to report increased awareness and confidence in addressing bullying.
Discussion: This proposal outlines a strategic plan to address bullying and discrimination within the NHS. By evaluating and enhancing current policies, encouraging allyship and bystander interventions, and implementing awareness training, the project aims to significantly improve staff well-being and patient care quality. These methods and outcomes will support long-term cultural change, promoting a safe and supportive work environment for all NHS staff.
