Abstract
Introduction Research in critical care is key to improving outcomes for critically ill patients. Consenting patients for research in intensive care is challenging. A key part of consent in research is the provision of information to enable individuals to make informed decisions about the risks and benefits of participation. Recent research has discussed alternative strategies for providing research information, such as multimedia. To date, key stakeholder perspectives on use of these alternative strategies in critical care has not been explored. This study aims to investigate the perspectives of Chief Investigators (CIs) on different strategies for providing information about research studies in critical care. Methods We will develop and pilot-test a survey, which we will then send to CIs of all multi-centre, UK-based critical care trials from the last 10 years, which required consenting of patients and/or surrogate decision-makers (SDMs). CIs will be identified through the NIHR portfolio of studies. The survey will explore currently used strategies, what alternative strategies would be considered, and reasons for these perspectives. The survey will be predominantly quantitative with a limited number of open-ended questions. Analysis Anonymised survey data will be analysed using descriptive statistics. Open-ended questions will be analysed using content analysis. Discussion This survey study will provide important new information on current practices on information provision in critical care research. Further research will likely include investigating the perspectives of ex-intensive care patients and their SDMs on current and alternative strategies used to provide research information.
