Abstract
Project Aim: To reduce the number of patients at Hawkesbury Lodge who are still in bed at midday by 50%. Part of rehabilitation is encouraging patients to engage in meaningful routine and activities, similar to how they would live when back in the community, and also practicing good sleep hygiene. Patients at Hawkesbury Lodge rehab ward were often still in bed at lunchtime, meaning they were not engaging in the rehab process or in activities. This hindered the ability to help patients develop the skills needed to live independently in the community. To support patients to be out of their rooms and engaged by midday, a number of activities and groups have been tried so far including brunch, coffee morning meetings, baking, mocktail making, cleaning, daily walks and outings. Tools Used: Driver Diagram - https://aqua.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/qsir-driver-diagrams.pdf; PDSA Cycles - https://aqua.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/qsir-pdsa-cycles-model-for-improvement.pdf; SPC Charts - https://aqua.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/qsir-statistical-process-control.pdf; Staff and Patient Surveys. Project Impact: Changes are leading to improvements in patients being up and out of their rooms by midday. The SPC charts show a statistically significant increase in the number of patients out of their rooms by midday. The number of patients in their room at midday has reduced from 8 in March to 4 in October – while there is some variation, the 50% target has been achieved. The mean number of patients asleep at midday is only 1. Patients are involved in suggesting activities they would like to do for the week ahead. Food based activities and outings paid for by the ward such as cinema and bowling have the biggest impact on patient engagement.
