Abstract
Introduction:
The value of prehabilitation is recognised, however services are not consistent between different NHS trusts and there is not at present a clear guideline on exactly what a prehabilitation service should involve. Sharing examples of practice and data collection has been recommended to help to develop prehabilitation guidelines, to support new services, and to strengthen the evidence base for prehabilitation (1). This presentation/poster will outline our experience of the process of setting up and developing a new AHP-led prehabilitation therapy service in an acute NHS trust, and data gathered so far.
Method:
A business case was submitted and funding agreed through Macmillan for a two year pilot of a team consisting of a full-time team lead/dietician, a 0.5 WTE physiotherapist, a 0.5 WTE occupational therapist, and a full time therapy support worker. The team started seeing patients before admission for treatment for haematological conditions (CAR-T, stem cell transplant) in April 2024. A screening process, individual and group interventions, and patient resources were developed and implemented.
Results:
Various qualitative and quantitative data has been collected to measure the value of the service both to patients (e.g. confidence to self-manage issues related to cancer and cancer treatment) and to the trust (e.g. length of admission, complications after treatment). As a new service the data is limited, but early outcomes are positive.
Discussion:
Sharing our experiences and data collected in setting up a new prehabilitation service will hopefully be of value to other organisations, particularly in the less researched area of haematology.
