Abstract
Background:
A tinnitus information group pathway was developed to explore whether tinnitus support could be effectively delivered in a group setting to address demand and capacity challenges resulting in increased waiting times.
Aim:
The initiative aimed to enhance patients’ understanding of tinnitus and provide education on management strategies.
Methods:
Referrals were received from ENT, and suitable patients were identified from the tinnitus waiting list. Those with severe/profound hearing loss, interpreter needs, or other complex issues were excluded from group participation. Two groups of 10 patients each were formed, with sessions led by a minimum of two Tinnitus Audiologists. Each group attended two 90-minute sessions held one week apart, covering the auditory system, tinnitus models, sound therapy, stress management, sleep, relaxation, and coping mechanisms. Follow-up was conducted via 15-minute telephone reviews to address additional concerns.
Results:
Attendance varied between 4 and 10 patients per session, with higher participation in the initial sessions. Written feedback was obtained from 10 participants, all of whom found the sessions beneficial and would recommend them to others. Outcome data and qualitative clinician feedback are being collated for final reporting.
Conclusion:
Tinnitus information group sessions demonstrate a viable method to support patients while managing service capacity.
