Abstract
Aim: To increase client engagement in therapeutic activity on Hazelwood Rehabilitation Unit by improving staff confidence levels.
As part of the Rehabilitation Mental Health Inpatient Transformation work, it was agreed to use a QI approach, working with the unit to identify change ideas that could be implemented and tested locally that may help to reduce length of stay. This project is focused on engaging clients in a meaningful way i.e., doing activities on or off the ward, socialising in the lounge, etc. There is also a focus on staff confidence and training to deliver therapeutic interventions.
Change ideas included starting team supervision for staff and offering protected learning time/a productive working model with opportunities for staff training and development. There was a dedicated staff member to facilitate weekly community meetings and organise the activity timetable. New activities and therapeutic groups were offered for clients including sensory relaxation and music appreciation. Night staff also started activity groups they were running such as film nights, themed evenings and games. Engaging clients in weekly discussions and decision-making about activity for the week ahead. Setting up a daily morning meeting on the unit.

83% of clients surveyed reported that they felt more engaged in the activities and groups offered on the ward, and more involved in the planning of activities offered on the ward.
Staff felt that the barriers they identified previously that have improve the most are communication and preconceived ideas. Staff also highlighted improvements in consistency of activities, being reactive to clients’ wishes, and staff’s enthusiasm to deliver groups.
